"I just got back from another solo trip in the backcountry at Kejimkujik National Park with my Swift canoe. I paddled the Mattawa (Carbon Fusion layup) over many kilometers of small, calm lakes as well as big, rough lakes and carried it over 12 portages (including one that was over 2 kilometers long, over which I didn't even need to set it down to rest once!) What a difference having this canoe makes! Many times before having one, I would not bother going on a trip because it was just so much work to load, paddle and portage. But now, I can just look forward to the trips and simply enjoy the the whole experience. My wife was sold on it as soon as she helped me lift it to take it for a test - as soon as she lifted it, a look of amazement crossed her face and a quick paddle made her realize this was something she could easily use and not struggle with. Canoeing had always seemed like it should be such peaceful activity, but the reality was consistently different. So much of my mind was taken up with fighting to get the canoe to the water, and once it was there, fighting to make it do what I wanted. It wasn't until I gave a Mattawa a try that I was able to have an experience canoeing that actually felt as good as it looks in pictures or described in books. It is a truly Zen-like, peaceful experience. This has opened up canoeing as something that I don't just do with my guy friends, but something enjoyable I can do with my whole family. I'm looking forward to taking my little girl on her first backcountry trip next summer. I know you can buy cheaper canoes, and I've used my share of them in the past. The overall experience simply doesn't compare, in my opinion. They might be cheaper, but they're effectively worthless to me. Finally, Tony and Jane at Paddle East have been everything one could hope for, answering my multitude of questions patiently and making sure I had all the information I needed to make the right choices.
